Assertive/Receptive × Projective/Connective · The Modes of Activity
The Four Engagements
When the primordial polarity of Qian and Kun crosses with the operational capacities of Hun and Po, four modes of engagement emerge: Decision, Action, Knowledge, and Experience. These describe how a person actually participates in the world — how the Assertive and Receptive forces express themselves through projection and connection.
The Cross of Activity
The second cross shifts from what a person is to how a person acts. When the Assertive/Receptive polarity meets the Projective/Connective capacities, four modes of engagement appear.
Decision and Action belong to the Assertive pole (Qian): they go outward, they initiate. Knowledge and Experience belong to the Receptive pole (Kun): they take in, they receive. Decision and Knowledge operate through projection (Hun). Action and Experience operate through connection (Po).

Decision — Qian + Hun
Assertive-Projective
The Assertive force expressed through Projective awareness. Decision is the moment where direction is chosen and intention forms — the act of committing the will toward a course. It encompasses everything a person proposes, plans, resolves, and determines: the directing, managing, guiding consciousness.
Decision has two faces, corresponding to the two Projective powers. Through Jupiter (Native-Projective), decision draws on vision, ethical orientation, and the sense of what is meaningful — the far-reaching commitment shaped by ideals. Through Mercury (Directive-Projective), decision operates by calculation, strategy, and practical assessment — the near-sighted optimization of means toward ends. The polarity within Decision runs between the purposeful and the expedient, between choices made from conviction and choices made from advantage.
Action — Qian + Po
Assertive-Connective
The Assertive force expressed through Connective instinct. Action is initiative made physical: energy moving outward into execution, performance, and direct engagement with the world. It includes everything a person undertakes, builds, strives for, and accomplishes.
Action has two faces, corresponding to the two Connective powers of the Assertive pole. Through Venus (Native-Connective), action expresses itself as care, collaboration, and the impulse toward harmony — the tactful, peace-seeking approach that works through connection. Through Mars (Directive-Connective), action becomes assertion, challenge, and the willingness to break resistance — the forceful engagement that desires impact. The polarity within Action runs between the considerate and the confrontational, between creating through invitation and creating through force.
Knowledge — Kun + Hun
Receptive-Projective
The Receptive capacity expressed through Projective awareness. Knowledge is pattern gathered from what has been received: everything that enters consciousness and organizes itself into understanding, conviction, and principle. It encompasses innate recognition, accumulated learning, and the frameworks through which a person interprets what they encounter.
Knowledge has two faces, corresponding to the two Projective powers of the Receptive pole. Through Neptune (Native-Projective), knowledge operates as direct recognition — the non-judgmental seeing, the healthy sense that grasps a situation before analysis begins, the confidence that does not require proof. Through Iustitia (Directive-Projective), knowledge becomes structured principle — the measured assessment, the critical verification, the accumulated rules and standards by which experience is ordered. The polarity within Knowledge runs between trust and skepticism, between insight received and conclusion established.
Experience — Kun + Po
Receptive-Connective
The Receptive capacity expressed through Connective instinct. Experience is the world registering in the body and senses: everything a person undergoes, encounters, and feels at the level of direct sensation — the physical and psychical circumstances of a lived life.
Experience has two faces, corresponding to the two Connective powers of the Receptive pole. Through Faunus (Native-Connective), experience manifests as nourishment, calm, regeneration, and the feeling of safety — the deep well of vitality that sustains and restores. Through Pluto (Directive-Connective), experience manifests as crisis, tension, struggle, and the confrontation with mortality — the descent that strips away what is not essential. The polarity within Experience runs between fullness and emptiness, between shelter and exposure, between the renewing and the consuming.
