Signs, Trigrams, and the Seasonal Wheel
Zodiac Correspondences
The twelve zodiac signs map to the eight trigrams and four additional principles — symbolic mirrors where the Western seasonal wheel reflects the same energetic patterns the Chinese tradition maps through the Wuxing.

地支 The Animal Wheel
The Chinese zodiac can also be laid over the King Wen arrangement of the trigrams. Read that way, the twelve animals distribute around the eight directions as a second symbolic mirror:
- Heaven: Dog, Boar
- Lake: Rooster
- Fire: Horse
- Thunder: Rabbit
- Wind: Dragon, Snake
- Water: Rat
- Mountain: Ox, Tiger
- Earth: Sheep, Monkey
This is the animal layer already reflected on the eight trigram pages. It belongs to the Later Heaven arrangement, where the trigrams are read through direction, season, and lived process rather than primordial symmetry alone.
降世 The Birth Process — Aries, Taurus, Gemini
The first three signs depict the Xiantian-to-Houtian transition, the fall described in the cosmology:
♈ Aries (☳ Zhen, Mars): The burst of incarnation. Raw Qi entering the world. The body’s first cry. Ming (命) flowing outward into survival immediately.
♉ Taurus (☵ Kan, Faunus): The vital substance that was supposed to meet pattern. The garden, the fullness, the potential of the Jing (精). But already, Xing (性) is being left behind.
♊ Gemini (☲ Li, Mercury): The Shishen (識神, acquired mind) takes command. Language, networking, exchange: the tools of navigation in the Houtian world. From here, the split between Yuanshen and Shishen becomes permanent.
四季 The Seasonal Wheel
The zodiac follows the same seasonal logic as the Wuxing:
- Spring (♈ → ♉ → ♊): Fire/Water/Wood — the burst of new life, the garden, the awakening mind
- Summer (♋ → ♌ → ♍): Earth/Fire/Metal — the nurturing source, the sovereign self, the discriminating harvest
- Autumn (♎ → ♏ → ♐): Fire/Water/Wood — reconciliation, transformation, expansion
- Winter (♑ → ♒ → ♓): Earth/Wood/Metal — time’s weight, the outer fire, dissolution into formlessness
